Netflix to reduce smoking in programming despite criticism

I grew up in the 80s. I remember when smoking in restaurants was "what people did." Smoking was an ever-present occurrence back then.

In that way, smoking in shows like Stranger Things could be described as "historically accurate." Which is why I applaud Netflix for agreeing to cut down on depictions of smoking in certain programming.

Regardless of whether smoking was common back then, we now know the dangers of smoking, as well as the peer pressure that comes from depictions of smoking as "cool" or "common," particularly for young people. "Historical accuracy" isn't worth putting people's health and lives at risk.

And as a side note: what's the point of railing about "historical accuracy" when talking about a show with telekinetic powers, other dimensions, and demogorgons?
